Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre provides a 3 part Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) and Concussion handbook which includes tips and tools for recovering from a concussion/mTBI, and guides readers to create their own personal recovery plan.

Handbook: Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation (ONF)

ONF’s Concussion Booklet provides useful concussion management and recovery information for patients and families.

Handbook: Ontario Brain Injury Association (OBIA)

This Adult Concussion Handbook by OBIA provides plenty of information on symptoms and recovery of concussions and mTBIs for adults.

Handbook: Managing Persistent Post-Concussion Symptoms

University Health Network (UHN) and the Canadian Concussion Centre have created this educational booklet for patients to learn about post-concussion symptoms, how to manage them, as well as further post-concussion resources.

Canadian Concussion Centre and UHN: Webinar Series for Concussion Education

The Canadian Concussion Centre offers a free 26-session Webinar Series which features expert clinicians discussing a wide range of topics related to prolonged post-concussion symptoms and recovery. These webinars are for individuals with prolonged concussion symptoms, their families, friends, caregivers, and other healthcare professionals.

Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation (ONF): Concussion Healthcare and Treatment (CHaT) Videos

ONF’s Concussion Healthcare and Treatment (CHaT) Videos provide a brief and general overview of the different types of healthcare providers involved in concussion care (including occupational therapists!). These videos are based on ONF’s Guidelines for Concussion/mTBI and prolonged symptoms 3rd Edition for Adults (2018) as well as ONF’s Standards for Post-Concussion Care (2017).

Smartphone Apps

MyBrainPacer™ App by St.Joseph's Health Care (London)

MyBrainPacer is a free mobile app which allows users to assign values to tasks like driving, grocery shopping, screen use and exercise so they can plan and pace their daily activity following concussion or mTBI. Users are given a total number of points per day that will keep their symptoms within the “safe range” and can increase their points as necessary as their recovery progresses. The concept of this app is based on St. Joseph’s Pacing and Planning Program which has helped hundreds of patients achieve their rehabilitation and recovery goals.

Concussion Ed App by Parachute Canada

Concussion Ed is a free app designed by Parachute Canada to provide Canadians with access to critical concussion resources. This mobile app is available in both English and French, and was updated in 2019 to reflect the latest evidence and follows the recommendations of the Canadian Guidelines on Concussion in Sport. The Concussion Ed app is organized to four different sections (Prevent, Recognize, Manage, Track). It also includes a checklist to help individuals with concussions recognize their symptoms and be able to track them anywhere and anytime regardless of their access to internet on their mobile device.

Sharing Experiences with Concussion/TBI is a podcast which aims to educate, support, and spread awareness on the many factors involved in Concussion/TBI injuries. The podcast includes episodes which focus on understanding the lived experiences of individuals with Concussion/TBI.

The Post Concussion Podcast: Life After a Brain Injury

The Post Concussion Podcast is hosted by Bella Paige, a woman whose life was altered significantly from multiple concussions. This podcast explores the realities of living with concussions and challenges with recovery. The Post Concussion Podcast aims to educate not only individuals with lived experience about concussion management but also parents, friends, siblings, caregivers, and anyone else who wants to understand more about the impact of concussions on everyday life.

Mindshift is an app created by Anxiety Canada that is free and accessible to the public. Mindshift provides users with strategies based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to relieve symptoms and help users take control of their anxiety. Mindshift provides tools to address worry, panic, perfectionism, social anxiety, and phobias.

Bounce Back powered by CAMH

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) generates Bounce Back, a free program that offers skill-building resource and mental health coaching through 6 telephone sessions. This program is designed to support people in managing low mood, mild to moderate depression and anxiety, stress or worry.
